City of Trotwood lawyers confirmed on November 3, 2004 that this 600+ acre site is owned by a subsidiary of Waste Management and that they are testing the site to determine if it would meet the Ohio EPA requirements for a landfill. The city modified their zoning regulations in January 2005 limiting landfills to 50 acres and prohibiting them in agricultural districts. Waste Management presented a proposal to allow a landfill on this site in April 2005. The City Council unanimously rejected their offer. As of January 2007 Waste Management has had no further discussion with the city.
In October of 2007 Totally Trotwood reported the regional parks district, Five Rivers MetroParks, took an option on 359 acres of the land owned by Waste Management. They are planning to build a wetlands mitigation bank on the site. This plan minimizes the chance of a landfill being located on the site. Sources at Five Rivers indicate that Waste Management would like to sell the remaining acres as well. The 359 acres is the entire red area west of Snyder Road.
